Dr Bonanni has dealt with personalized clinical prevention for years, with the objective of managing subjects with personal and/or strong family history of tumors or precancerous lesions and implementing targeted strategies for risk reduction.
In cancer prevention, the precise selection of the subjects is important, based on multi-factorial oncologic risk assessment taking into account: age, lifestyles, late pregnancies, endocrine / metabolic factors, and familiarity/genetics, etc.
Through accurate, clinical and instrumental surveys and the use of biostatistics models of evaluation, it is today possible to calculate the level of risk of one subject for some types of cancer, that can be managed with various combinations of regular check-ups and preventative measures (consulting for Drug Prevention - trial or off-trial - and lifestyle change; consulting on onco-genetics - counseling and genetic testing, intensive surveillance, prophylactic surgery, etc.).
Dr Bonanni has taken on a lot of the management of high-risk candidates for genetic testing and counseling, follow-up and measures of cancer prevention. He has been the coordinator of the multidisciplinary High Risk Clinic at IEO since 2005, that provides:
- Genetic Counseling and Genetic Testing
- Multidisciplinary (panel of experts) Consults
- Programs of intensive clinical and instrumental Surveillance
- Studies on drug prevention and modification of lifestyles
- Personalized programs of Prophylactic Surgery.
