Tumors of the lung and mediastinum, esophagus cancer, cancer of the pleura and chest wall.
In addition to lung cancer, Dr Spaggiari’s interests are:
- mediastinum tumors that in some cases, when of extreme dimensions, are operated in collaboration with cardiac surgeons of the Hospital IRCCS in Monza;
- tumors of the pleura and especially mesotheliomas. Among the few in Italy to have an operated series of relevant pleura-pneumonectomia. An Italian study has recently been completed on the use of pleuro-pneumonectomia after induction chemotherapy and postoperative radiotherapy;
- primary tumors of the chest wall in collaboration with the plastic and reconstructive surgery at IEO;
Currently one of the reference centers for surgery of pulmonary metastases. To date, performed 811 metastasectomy interventions since 1998, case studies presented in July 2009 at the 13th World Conference on Lung Cancer-IALSC, 31 Jul 2009-4 Aug 2009 San Francisco, California, USA.
Finally great interest for esophageal cancer surgery. Although these patients often unfortunately come to diagnosis at an advanced stage, we are adopting minimally invasive techniques (robots and thoracoscopy) for these patients.
In summary, every area of thoracic oncology is covered by the division, using the most modern instrumental and biological techniques with strong innovative drive.
Very recently, to complete the therapeutic offer, a project of interventional oncology bronchoscopy has been prepared. This project involves the insertion of interventional pulmonologists, for the management of patients with chronic respiratory failure and thoracic neoplasms requiring action, that will be managed in a unit of intensive respiratory surveillance in the department of thoracic surgery; further a unit of interventional bronchoscopy for diagnosis both flexible and rigid, and therapy of thoracic malignancies.
